הכל מתחיל בשדה רחב ידיים שבו ציפורנים בגובה הברכיים בגווני ורוד ממלאים את הבמה ומסתיים באלפיים פרחים רמוסים.

כארבעה עשורים מאז ש'ציפורנים' ( Nelken) עלתה בבכורה בוופרטל יש תחושת אי נוחות מסוימת לקרוא את העבודה כמטפורה למה שהפכנו להיות; עוורים לעוולות, חיים בהסכמה שבאדישות לאלימות במרחב ציבורי והלאומי. מסתפקים במשיכת כתפיים.

רבים ראו ב'ציפורנים'- אחת מהעבודות החביבות על הקהל – הומאז' לאביב, לתקווה אך במבט לאחור אין להתעלם שכל הדילוגים הקלילים בשמלות מתנפנפות בשדה הספקטקורלרי הפורח, מתאפשרים בזכות קבוצת שומרים מאיימים, סובבי השדה, חמושים בכלבי תקיפה שמחכים לאות לפתוח פה כפי שאולפו לעשות. בעת הזו כבר קשה להניח שמדובר בגחמה, בעיטור דרמטי גרידא.

אין חולקים כי פינה באוש הייתה אחת מהכוריאוגרפים המוערכים והמשפיעים במחצית השנייה של המאה העשרים, כשהציעה תפיסה מחולית אישית של תיאטרון מחול אקספרסיבי חדש שהתפתח להיות זה שתרם לפרק מבנים מסורתיים לינארים. לחילופין היא הציעה להחליפם בעבודה רב-שכבתית הבנויה מסצנות קצרות שבמבט ראשון נדמה היה שהן תלויות זו בזו בקשרים רופסים.

מאז שויתרה על התפתחות לינארית כפי שעשתה ביצירותיה המוקדמות, כמו 'פולן האביב' היא זכתה בחרות  עצומה בבואה לחצוב את עיקר חומרי תכניה הכוריאוגרפיים הן מתוכה והן מהקרביים הרגשיים של רקדניה. את אלה היא עיבדה באיזמל  והציעה את החומרים המרשימים, האניגמאטיים לקהל  כמתת רגשי וחזותי מאתגר. בעוד היא תורמת את חומרי הגירוי, המתבונן  מתבקש לעכל את הנתונים ולהפיק מהם תובנות.

על במת האמפיתיאטרון בקיסריה, בעת השקיעה בשנת 1991 העלתה להקת תיאטרון המחול וופרטל  בביקורה השלישי בארץ את 'ציפורנים', אחת מעבודותיה הקנוניות של באוש. קשה לומר שההפקה הנוכחית שונה בהרבה מזו שראינו בקיסריה, אך היום זה מרגיש ככה ממספר סיבות. מאמצים רבים נעשים כדי לשמר את עבודותיה של באוש שנפטרה לפני כעשור על ידי צוות מנהלים.  הרי לא ייתכן שיגרע מקומם של תמונות כמו התהלוכה המרקדת –הגאונית, יש לומר- שבמהלכה שורת הרקדנים מהדסת מעדנות ומבצעת בשפת מחוות ידיים את ארבע העונות שוב ושוב כשהרקדנים מפיקים חיוכים שובי לב לאולם. ומי ישכח את התמונה שבה רוקדים על ומתחת לשולחן הארוך במרכז הבמה, או את הנפילה מהמגדלים הגבוהים של הפעלולנים שנחתו על ערימות קופסאות קרטון. לא נפקד מקומו של רקדן שמלווה בשפת הסימנים את שירה של סופי טוקר 'The man I Love' ועוד. 

בחלק מהתמונות, הביצועים חיוורים ביחס לאלה של אותם מבצעים ותיקים שפרשו והיו מזוהים עם התפקיד וצמחו אתו בפיקוחה הדקדקני והתובעני של באוש.

זה נכון גם בדינמיקה של כמה סצנות גדולות קולניות שסבלו ממאמץ יתר כמו משחק הילדים רווי העצבים 'אחת שתיים שלוש דג מלוח' שנדמה היה שלא ייגמר לעולם.

אך מעבר לכך. הזמנים השתנו וכל העולם מתנהל מזמן על מסלולים מהירים. גם ההומור כבר לא מה שהיה וסצנה שבנויה על שני זוגות גברים המכים זה על ישבנו של רעהו בסגנון הסלפסטיק ( סליחה, התפלק לי)  כבר בקושי מדגדג.

מחול עכשווי, תיאטרון פיזי, פרפורמנס ארט וז'אנרים נוספים מאתגרים דרכים להגדיר את גבולות הגזרה מאז שנות השבעים והשמונים שבהם פרח תיאטרון המחול של וופרטל תחת שרביטה של פינה באוש.

במובן מסוים, כמו האופן בו אנו מביטים על בלט, באוש -ויש מלא כבוד- היא היסטוריה.
